Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 100

1967 Rover 3 Litre Coupe

Chassis No. - 80500536A

Registration - WGU 207F

M.O.T. - July 2021

Odometer - 49,660

This excellent-looking example of Rover’s MKIII 3 Litre Coupe is unusual in featuring a dual fuel LPG conversion, and comes with the related certificate and amendment to its V5C. It also benefits from a folding Webasto sunroof plus front and rear headrests, all of which were original optional equipment fitted to the car from new, as was an overdrive gearbox for relaxed cruising. The vendor describes the P5 as being ‘in very good condition all-round and driving extremely well’. He also informs us that the interior ‘presents well, with the headlining and rest of the trim being in very good shape’. ‘WGU 207F’ has recently been treated to a mechanical service and possesses an MOT that’s valid until July 19 this year. The accompanying file apparently documents the Rover’s early history as well as the more recent bouts of general maintenance. Finished in the pleasing combination of Admiralty Blue over Silver Birch, this delightful coupe has had just five owners from new and currently displays a total of 49,660 miles.

Rover’s elegant P5 series was launched in 1958 and powered by basically the same 3.0-litre straight-six engine as the P4 Saloon. Designed by David Bache, the luxuriously-equipped 3 Litre featured independent front suspension with wishbones and torsion bars, and a leaf-sprung live axle at the rear. An early modification was the replacement of the 11 inch front drum brakes with a disc system. A MKII version offered more power and the option of a striking coupe body. The engine output was raised once again for the MKIII variant of 1965, at which time the rear bench seat was replaced by a pair of individually-moulded chairs, increasing the comfort for four adults.

In summary:

  • An apparently fine example of an enduring British classic
  • Benefits from such niceties as sunroof and overdrive gearbox
  • Equipped with dual fuel LPG conversion
