The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 100

1967 Austin-Healey 3000
`Restored, late-model example, in ‘excellent’ condition throughout

Registration - CRF 888E

Chassis No. - HBJ8/40584

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 81,400

This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 is notable in being one of the final ‘big Healeys’ built before production at Abingdon ended later in 1967. 'CRF 888E' is finished in classic British Racing Green, which is combined with a sporty black leather interior. The vendor describes the car as being in 'excellent' condition throughout, with the 'immaculate' seats having benefited from a re-trim – and, as this is a later Mark III BJ8 model, it also has a walnut dashboard, which is in 'near-perfect' condition. It also has a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, which the vendor reports as working 'well'. The odometer shows a mileage reading of 81,400.

This Austin-Healey has enjoyed a thorough restoration, and the vendor simply says that “everything is done”. A 2014 refresh included a chassis and spline grease, a flush and refill for all hydraulics, and a comprehensive engine tune including work on the carburettors, timing, ignition system and so on. More recently, it has had a complete front and rear brake reline, with new front calipers “and a myriad of bits ‘n bobs to make it perfect”. 'CRF 888E' also comes with a comprehensive set of paperwork detailing the expenditure over the years.

A real favourite with American buyers, the Austin-Healey 3000 was the most renowned models from the combination between Austin and Donald Healey. It used the big 3.0-litre straight-six BMC C-Series engine, giving 0-60mph performance in a sprightly 11.0-seconds – and it could accelerate to 100mph in around 30 seconds. Indeed, one period magazine recorded a top speed of 115mph which was pretty thrilling for 1959. This car is quicker still, thanks to a power boost from 136bhp to 150bhp for the Mark III models. The Austin Healey proved very popular, selling many thousands per year, while period success in motorsport continues to this day, with the car a favourite amongst classic motorsport enthusiasts.

In summary:

· Late-model Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III

· In excellent condition throughout

· Many thousands spent on it over the years to make it “perfect”
