Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 101

1950s Rhonson Rhonsonnette Cyclemotor

And now for something completely different – a Rhonsonnette, ie a classic French cyclemotor that was manufactured by the short-lived company Rhonson of Lyon sometime in the 1950s. According to the vendor, who purchased it from a flea market in St Tropez, the model was a de-luxe offering that represented the pinnacle of Rohnson’s developments. Liveried in black and green, it is in delightfully-unmolested original condition, and comes complete with such niceties as a leather saddle, lighting, luggage rack, hand pump, stand and rear-view mirror, but no paperwork. The bike is apparently in running condition, but is currently hampered by what the vendor describes as a ‘broken inlet pipe spigot to carburettor’.

This natty-looking two-speed cyclemotor of the type once so beloved by the French, is powered by a 50cc ABG VAP single-cylinder engine for which spares should hopefully be readily obtainable to this day, as it was not only employed by Rhonson but most of its national competitors of the day. A charming offering that could no doubt be relatively easily returned to the road and provide a new owner with economical motoring for many years to come.

In summary

  • A classic French cyclemotor of a type rare to these shores
  • Charmingly unmolested and original
  • Potentially very economical to own and run
