Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 102

1996 Volvo 850 GLT Saloon
***NO RESERVE***

Chassis No. - YV1LS5106V2357621

Registration - N218 AFL

M.O.T. - October 2021

Odometer - 113,000

Everybody’s aware of Volvo’s reputation for making safe, long-lasting cars, but the vendor of ‘N218 AFL’ (and two other Volvos in this sale) paints a new dimension when he talks of ‘safe Swedish solidity so well appointed that it’s an antimacassar short of your great aunt’s parlour; it is such a pleasant place to be. It’s not only smooth on the inside but the outside too, and travels in Citroënesque style, absorbing British road irregularities in its stride’. Well appointed, this automatic 2.5-ltre GLT comes with such niceties as heated seats and heated driver’s door mirror. Its silver bodywork is matched to a predominantly black interior, the effect of which is lifted by areas of light-coloured wood trim. A previous owner apparently mislaid the service book, but the vendor says ‘the standard of presentation suggests that all of them looked after the car with some care and concern’. To date this venerable Volvo has had 12 keepers, who between them have amassed a total of 113,000 miles. It comes with an MOT valid until October 6 this year and is being sold Without Reserve.

Volvo’s 850 saloons and estates were produced from 1991 to 1996, when the range morphed into the S70 and V70 respectively. The launch slogan was ‘A dynamic car with four unique innovations’, which related to the transverse five-cylinder engine, Delta-link rear axle, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and self-adjusting seat belts. The GLT acronym stood for Grand Luxe Touring.

In summary:

  • Seemingly in fine order for its age and mileage
  • A high specification model
  • Being sold Without Reserve
