According to the vendor, this well-presented Golf Cabriolet ‘runs and drives like it came out of the showroom last month’. He notes that the bodywork ‘has a mark here and there, but nothing serious’, and overall views the 2-litre engine and five-speed manual transmission as being in ‘excellent’ condition, and the convertible bodywork, black paintwork and black/grey interior trim as ‘good’ throughout. The car has apparently recently benefited from a new clutch and these days rides on a set of BBS alloy wheels, which are the only non-original part save for the uprated suspension system, which is adjustable for ride and handling. The windows and hood are manually operated so, as the vendor points out, there are no related electrical problems to worry about. He is now offering the Golf complete with CD player and a current MOT that’s valid until June 25 next year. The odometer currently displays an unwarranted total mileage of 88,038.
The Golf I Cabriolet was the spiritual successor to the soft-top Beetle and made its debut at the Geneva Salon in 1979. Built by Karmann, it was the first car in its class to be equipped with a fixed rollover bar. Launched in 1993, the Cabriolet IIs, were initially based on the third generation Golf, but from 1997 they were updated with the front end and powertrain of the fourth-generation model, of which the sale car is an example. By the time cabriolet production ceased in 2001 (there was a 10-year hiatus before the final iteration appeared in 2011), Karmann’s Osnabrück factory had manufactured a total 600,585 soft top versions of the Golf.
