March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 12

1978 MGB GT

Registration - GCK 105S

Chassis No. - GHD5456809

M.O.T. - June 2023

Odometer - 89,000

As a 1978 model, this smartly-presented GT would have started life as a rubber bumper MGB but, rather than be converted to the earlier chrome bumper specification it has been reconfigured to run without any such appendages. Finished in the vibrant livery of Vermillion Red, it currently rides on silver-painted wire wheels, but the lot also includes a set of Minilite alloys. The vendor acquired ‘GCK 105S’ in 2017 and informs us that it had spent 30 of its previous 39 years in dry storage, ‘hence the lack of corrosion’. Since assuming ownership he has lovingly restored the MG to its current impressive condition, a painstaking process that included a complete respray. He now considered the car’s B Series engine, manual transmission and fully-working overdrive, bodywork, paintwork and black interior trim to all be in ‘excellent’ order, and has just had the MG serviced and equipped with an electronic ignition system. The GT is now being offered complete with leather-rimmed steering wheel, alloy rocker cover, sports air filter, Cottonlilac radio/MP3 player and a current MOT valid to June 15.

Initially, the B was only available in roadster form – the Pininfarina-penned hatchback GT derivative with 2+2 seating not being offered until October 1965. The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators. With the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in the car’s history occurred two years later, when steel reinforced plastic bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. These changes were demanded by the American market, which had accounted for much of the car’s production from day one.

In summary:

  • Dry stored for 30 of its 39 years
  • Lovingly restored over the last 4 years
  • Converted from rubber bumper to bumper-free configuration
