Lot 13

1979 Lotus Elite 504
***NO RESERVE*** High specification example including air conditioning and showing just 32,000 miles

Registration – GND 540V

Chassis No. – 7907/1557A

M.O.T. – Exempt

Odometer – 32,865

This striking 1979 Lotus Elite 504 instantly draws attention with its ultra-low (and verified) odometer reading of just 32,865 miles. The vendor says it is a very reluctant sale and is because they have back problems, meaning they sadly can no longer drive it. The original sales invoice reveals it was sold by Sports Motors in Manchester, with this range-topping Elite 504 featuring a three-speed automatic gearbox, power steering, air conditioning, electric windows and optional leather seats. Back in August 1979, it sold for £15,077. ‘GND540V’ is described as having an ‘excellent’ engine, transmission and electrics, helped by a comprehensive service history file. It was serviced every year or two, with Lotus specialist Esprit Cars taking over maintenance in 1990. More recently, the 2.0-litre 907 engine has enjoyed a recommissioning that included a replacement cambelt.

Fascinatingly, Esprit Cars proprietor, a Mr. Moore, gave ‘GND540V’ its original pre-delivery inspection, and looked after the car throughout its life – before eventually purchasing it in 2003. He only sold it himself in 2017, with this Elite now having three former keepers. A highly original example, ‘GND540V’ has period paintwork and interior, with the leather seats showing minimal wear. It even has its original dealer number plates, tax disc holder and tool kit, while the MOT history dates back to 1982. A fabulous and well-loved time capsule, this 1979 Lotus Elite 504 is a fascinating and highly desirable collectable.

The second-generation Lotus Elite was launched in 1974. It used the same name as the Type 14 sold between 1957-1963, but was a very different proposition, with a distinctive wedge-shaped design. Replacing the Elan Plus 2, the Type 74 Lotus Elite firmly took the brand upmarket and appealed to a new type of luxury sports car buyer. It used a new 2.0-litre engine, the Type 907, and was at launch the world’s most expensive four-cylinder car. Designer Oliver Winterbottom said the basic chassis and suspension layout were designed by Colin Chapman himself, meaning the Elite and replated Eclat were the last Lotus road cars with significant input from the company founder.

In Summary:

  • 1979 Lotus Elite 504 automatic
  • High spec includes air conditioning and leather seats
  • Highly original with comprehensive history file
