The vendor informs us this rare Matra Murena 2.2 was purchased by her late husband in 1986 while living in Switzerland, having acquired it directly from its first owner who had cherished the car from new in 1981. It was subsequently imported into the UK in 1987, where it has remained in the same enthusiast family ownership ever since. Supporting this long custodianship is a remarkable and extensive history file, containing invoices, manuals, club magazines, period brochures and even the original registration documentation – a level of provenance seldom encountered with such cars.
Presented in striking red with contrasting silver lower sections, the Murena blends wedge-era styling with the model’s hallmark three-abreast seating. Its lightweight composite body panels cover a 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine producing 120bhp, paired with a 5-speed gearbox. With a drag coefficient of just 0.32, it was praised in period as a practical sports car, notable for its distinctive design and intelligent use of space.
The car runs but, having seen little use following the passing of the vendor’s husband, now requires light recommissioning before returning to regular road use. A rare and fascinating survivor of French innovation, offered without reserve.
