This 2.2-litre W115 Mercedes is finished in a pleasing shade of metallic red with matching red hubcap wheel centre caps. The black-leather trimmed interior features red carpets to match the exterior and the whole aesthetic is one of an elegant luxury saloon. This is a low-owner motor car, which has the inimitable feel of on which has been in the care of enthusiasts. ‘NPU 955J’ has just seven keepers, with the sixth owner cherishing the vehicle for 22 years. The vendor describes the 2.2-litre diesel engine and four-speed automatic transmission as ‘excellent’, the electrics, bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’ and the interior – which feels wonderfully original, with the exception of the modern radio - as ‘average’. This is a fine and original example of one of Mercedes’ famously reliable and long-lived executive saloons.
The Paul Bracq-penned W114/W115 series of three-box Mercedes saloons and coupes was launched in 1968 and remained in production until it was replaced by the W123. The cars were offered with a choice of no less than 11 different engines ranging in size from a four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol unit to 3.0-litre five-cylinder diesel one. A total of 1,919,056 examples of the mark were built over the nine years, 1,852,008 of which were saloons. In addition to three different plants in their native Germany, the cars were also manufactured or assembled from CKD kits in Portugal, Venezuela, Argentina and South Africa, from the where the sale car originated. Found to be robust and reliable, the model soon found favour with taxi drivers the world over and, displayed within its Stuttgart museum, Mercedes has a 1976 240D saloon that was formerly the property of a Greek tax driver who clocked up a total of 2.9million miles with the car.
