September 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 14

2002 Mini Cooper S

Registration - YL02 NJO

Chassis No. - WMWRE32050TC63574

M.O.T. - November 2022

Odometer - 73,000

‘YL02 NJO’ is finished in the summery colours of white over yellow that that contrast nicely with the black interior trim. It is a six-owner example, the most recent of whom retained it for the last five years. The vendor describes the car as being ‘in good condition overall with minimal signs of wear’, and currently grades the engine and transmission as ‘excellent’, the upholstery as ‘good’ and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. The Cooper is blessed with a number of desirable factory-fitted options including: climate control, full leather interior, reversing sensors, headlamp washer, plus the optional 17-inch eight-spoke alloy wheels. The indicated overall mileage of 72,779 is backed by the service history and the car comes complete with stamped service book, original book pack, pair of keys and an MOT valid to November 12. What’s not to like?

The first generation of the BMW MINI was launched in late 2000, just months after the discontinuation of its classic predecessor. It was penned by the multi-talented Moroccan-born American Frank Stephenson, whose CV includes such other major hits as the Escort RS Cosworth, Ferrari 430 and McLaren MP4-12C. The Cooper S version (R53) came to the market in 2002. It was powered by a supercharged 1598cc derivative of the Brazilian-built Tritec engine, the output of which was 161bhp – sufficient to power the car to 62mph in around 7.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 135mph. The powerplant drove through a six-speed Getrag gearbox and, though outwardly very similar to its less powerful siblings, the Cooper S could be distinguished by its bonnet scoop and twin exhaust that that exited from the centre of the rear valence.

In summary:

  • Mileage of 73,000 backed by service history
  • Features a number of factory-fitted options
  • A tidy example from the first year of R53 production
