The Bolesworth Castle March 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 15

1962 Mercedes 220 SEB

Registration - 498 UYS

Chassis No. - 12798410003544

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 28,675

This stunning Mercedes-Benz 220 SEB is a wonderful example of the pillarless W111-series coupe. Left-hand drive, ‘498 UYS’ has been beautifully maintained, and for a time was included as part of the collection of the famous Kemp Auto Museum of ‘Mercedes And Other Fine Motor Cars’, that was sited in St Louis, USA before it closed down. The Ivory White bodywork, with lashings of chrome, is in ‘excellent’ condition according to the vendor, as is the interesting red leather interior, fitted with the optional and rare ‘opera seats’ – a pair of shaped individual chairs, rather than a rear bench. Unfortunately, when the museum closed down, many vehicles’ history records were lost, but there are photographs and documents confirming the vehicle was on display, and there is a matching numbers certificate from Daimler AG to confirm its provenance. All other aspects of the 220 SEB are described as ‘good’, including the powertrain, which comprises of 2.2-litre six-cylinder engine, and rare four-speed manual gearbox, and is offered with an indicated 28,675 miles on the odometer.

Introduced in mid-1959, the Mercedes-Benz W111 Series was a natural progression from the 220 Ponton. The new models were bigger inside and out and sported a greater abundance of brightwork; not to mention the finned rear wings which spawned the model’s ‘fintail’ nickname.

In addition to the four-door saloon, the range comprised an elegant two-door cabriolet and coupe. The cars were very well appointed inside, being adorned with Mercedes textured leather and wood trimmings.

In summary:

· Formerly part of the specialist American Kemp Museum

· A clearly fine example of a much-admired model

· Features rare rear ‘opera seats’ and four-speed manual gearbox
