September 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 15

1966 Wolsely 16/60

Registration - AVG 294D

Chassis No. - WHS361695

M.O.T. - May 2023

Odometer - 98,429

So, when did you last see one of these, and have you ever seen one in such glorious condition inside and out? It has had only four keepers to date, the most recent of whom imported the Wolseley from Northern Ireland in 2017. It was apparently Ziebarted at birth, while the gearbox was reconditioned and the clutch replaced five years ago. In recent times the dampers, brake cylinders and shoes, wheel bearings, certain steering items and carpets have all been replaced, and an electronic ignition system and sound proofing installed. The vendor now considers the four-cylinder 1622cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, four-door bodywork, blue and cream paintwork and original blue leather interior trim to all be in ‘excellent’ condition. He adds that there is ‘no rust or rot’ and that the car ‘starts, stops and drives as it should’. He’s now offering this splendid Wolseley complete with auxiliary driving lights, fishtail exhaust trim, classic-style number plates, chromed rocker cover, a small selection of spare parts, handbooks, and an extensive history file containing invoices and old MOTs, plus a current advisory-free one valid into May of next year. The odometer currently stands at 98,429 miles.

Launched in 1958, the Wolseley 15/60 was the first of BMC’s mid-sized products to be styled by Pininfarina, a design that would eventually be shared with seven other marques. The 16/60 of 1961 was a direct development of its predecessor and, among other things, brought with it and additional 133cc of engine capacity and the option of Borg Warner automatic transmission. Production of the 16/60 totalled 63,082 units.
