This visually appealing R230 Series Mercedes matches light grey hide upholstery with silver bodywork. In addition to a full service history courtesy of a mix of franchised dealers and independent specialists (the last service was carried out by Mercedes specialist Autoclass Garage just 2,463 miles ago) it boasts a fair level of additional maintenance. For example – all the following have been replaced in recent years: tyres, front brake pads, radio control unit, coolant circulation pump, bootlid struts and battery, and the alloy wheels have been fully refurbished and are now described as ‘as-new’. The vendor currently views the big Benz’s V6 engine, seven-speed automatic transmission, electrical system, retractable hardtop bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the interior trim as ‘good’. He is now offering the car complete with a pair of keys, the aforementioned service history, full owner’s book pack, selection of old invoices and old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid into October.
The fourth generation SL (R129 Series) was launched at the Geneva Salon of 1989. It was a beautifully-engineered car that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features. The specification included independent suspension all round, adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, a hidden roll-over bar that automatically extended when required, and front air bags. Next up was the R230 Series that was in production from 2001 to 2011 with a range of engines from a 3.7-litre 245bhp V6 to a thumping 6-litre V12 of no less than 604bhp. This newcomer was notable for its retractable hardtop, active body control and, on post-2004 versions, a new seven-speed automatic transmission.
