September 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 16

1958 Citroën 2CV AZL
A rare, early example, with sought-after 'ripple bonnet'

Registration - 330 XVK

Chassis No. - 1011836

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 33,636

‘330 XVK’ sports the type of ‘rippled’ bonnet that was unique to the earlier examples of 2CV and is finished in the mandatory shade of grey – other colours were not an option until 1960. A lefthand drive version, it was imported from its native France in December 2019 and first UK registered in March 2020. Clearly the subject of an earlier restoration, it presents well and the vendor consider the 425cc twin-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and grey fabric upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order. The distinctive two-spoke steering wheel and rudimentary dashboard have the patina of originality, and the vendor informs us that the car has ‘no known faults’. He is now offering the Gallic icon complete with spare wheel, jack and wheelbrace, plus the sales certificate chronicling the change of ownership prior to the Citroën’s arrival on these shores. The total recorded mileage stands at a credible though unwarranted 33,636km.

The creation of Citroën’s incomparable Deux Chevaux (2CV) dates back to 1936 and was intended to motorise the large number of French farmers still relying on the horse and cart. The unique design brief called for: a low-priced, rugged ‘umbrella on four wheels’ that would enable four peasants to drive 110lb of farm goods to market at 31mph in clogs and via muddy, unpaved roads; including transporting eggs across a ploughed field without breaking them. No less than 3.8 million examples were ultimately produced via 11 factories across the world (including one in Slough, England) between 1948 and 1990, by when the ageing design had been defeated by contemporary legislation. However, the charm of the model never fades and good ones remain keenly sought by collectors and classic car enthusiasts alike.

In summary:

  • A very well-presented lefthand drive ‘ripple’ bonnet example
  • Clearly the subject of a previous restoration
  • Comes with ‘good’ soft top and ‘good’ Michelin tyres all round
