The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

Lot 16

1983 BMW 518
In very original condition, finished in rare Pusta Green

Registration - A440 RMB

Chassis No. - WBADF1203D6525861

M.O.T. - February 2023

Odometer - 113,448

When suitably well cared for, 5 Series BMWs tend to run and run. This notably handsome example has had just four keepers from new, who’ve accrued a total of 113,448 miles between them. It is finished in the unusual livery of Pussta Green, that’s teamed with Anthracite-coloured cloth upholstery and gold centred BBS Mahle alloy wheels, the total effect of which is further enhanced by subtle gold pinstriping. The car was delivered new to its first owner in August 1983 by Red Rose Motors of Chester, whose sticker still resides in the rear window. Aside of evident wear on the driver’s seat cushion, the BMW seems in generally fine condition, and the vendor is perhaps being a bit harsh in classing the bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’, but the four-cylinder engine, manual transmission and interior trim as no better than ‘average’. However, he does go on to say that it’s ‘a very reliable and enjoyable daily driver’. He is now offering the car with an almost complete service history (20 stamps), a selection of invoices and most of its old MOTs, plus a current one valid into February next year.

It is hard to credit that the now mighty BMW was close to insolvency in the 1960s. The company’s meteoric rise to a position of considerable strength was achieved, not by startling innovation, but sound engineering and skilful evolution. The second generation (E28) 5 Series was introduced in 1981 with subtle changes to the original styling and mechanicals helping to ensure the model stayed ahead of the opposition. The 518 option was powered by a 1.8-litre version of the lusty M10 straight-four engine.

In summary:

  • A striking and well-presented example
  • Finished in an unusual shade of green that’s complemented by gold-centred BBS alloy wheels
  • Just four owners from new and an almost complete service history
