This 1988 Renault 5 GT Turbo Cup racing car is an original model built by Radbourne Racing in 1988 – it was known as ‘RAD 1’. It was first raced by seasoned Renault racer Dave Cox, who had a long career in the Renault 5 TS Challenge, Renault 5 GT Turbo Cup and later the Renault Clio Cup. Following action in the high-profile series, Radbourne sold the car to Peter Quinn, another notable racer. He used it in hillclimbs and springs during the 1990s. Significantly, it raced at the 2004 Renault 5 30th Anniversary race at Thruxton, footage of which can be seen on YouTube. Along with a brace of period decals on the exterior, the car still features Peter Quinn’s name and race number, adding to its originality.
Following its race career, the car was retired into a private collector for around 15 years. The vendor then acquired it and reports it now has a Renault 11 turbo, baffled sump and heat shield. There’s a front-mounted intercooler and external intercooler, a large downpipe and K-Tec side-exit exhaust. The car features its original Devil roll cage and strut brace, plus its original Cup wheels. The vendor describes the engine, transmission and electrics as all being in ‘excellent’ condition, while the interior is authentically race-spec to complement the exterior.
With the introduction of the all-new Renault 5 E-Tech electric, there is revived interest in original ‘Supercinq’ Renault 5. The GT Turbo is particularly collectable – including storied race cars such as this, that were driven by notable racers on the Renault scene. The car’s provenance is strong and the time is right to see this fun racer back in action.
