Half close your eyes, and it’s not difficult to visualise this luxuriously appointed Maserati motoring, top down, through picturesque Italian scenery, as it was born to do. However, this particular UK specification Cambiocorsa example has travelled less than 100 miles in the past 12 months, and a very modest 40,212 from new. The vendor, the Spyder’s seventh keeper, apparently acquired the car from a private collection as recently as last December. It’s attractive metallic blue paintwork is complemented by sumptuous tan leather interior trim and blue carpets, and it rides on period-correct alloy wheels shod with quality Continental tyres. The accompanying history file confirms a good level of maintenance over the years, with receipts from such Ferrari dealers and marque specialists as Maranello Egham, Dick Lovett, Lancaster, Autoshield and The Maserati Shed. The vendor presently considers the Spyder’s V8 engine, paddle-shift semi-automatic transmission, bodywork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order; also the paintwork, though he volunteers there is a scuff on the passenger side sill.
The Maserati 3200 GT broke cover in 1998. It was a svelte luxury coupe styled by Italdesign, whose founder, Giorgetto Giugiaro, had penned such past classics as the Ghibli, Bora and Merak for Maserati. The car was powered by a version of the twin-turbo 3.2-litre V8 engine found in the Quattroporte IV and Shamal, retuned to give 365bhp. The 3200 GT was superseded by the 4200 GT, which was available in coupe or spyder configuration – the spyder was unveiled at the 2001 Frankfurt motor show and the coupe at the Detroit Salon a few months later. Unlike its turbocharged predecessor, it was powered by a normally aspirated, Ferrari-based engine producing 390bhp from 4,244cc. As you would expect, performance was brisk, with the 0-60mph dash taking under 5 seconds and the ultimate speed topping 175mph.
