Lot 40

1969 Morris Minor 1000

Registration - RPN 191G

Chassis No. - MA2551240547M

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 27,300

Here’s a car that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to people’s faces, especially those old enough to remember the police panda vehicles of the 1960s or who’ve encountered them on such period TV series as Heartbeat. Apparently, its late keeper had once owned another ex-police Minor which he regretted selling. ‘RPN 191G’ was therefore purchased as a replacement and, though not in police livery when he required it, did have the tell-tale zip in its roof lining that such vehicles were equipped with. Having restored it to police specification he was in the process of tracking down evidence of its police service when he sadly passed away, so that task would now fall to the next keeper. His wife describes the panda as ‘a fantastic runner – a lovely car with good bodywork and in fair overall condition for its age’. Apparently as part of the restoration the Morris was equipped with a reconditioned gearbox, brake servo and alternator, and is now available for somebody new to enjoy by taking to shows and/or hiring out to TV and film companies etc.

The Morris Minor is almost as universal a symbol of England as the London bus and the red telephone box and, with over 1.3 million manufactured in its 23-year reign, is one of the most successful cars of all time. Designed by Alec Issigonis (who later penned the ubiquitous Mini), the Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show and 13 years later became the first British car to achieve a million sales. The term ‘panda car’ originally related to black police cars to which white panels had been added to increase their visibility, but became the nickname for the Morris Minors, Ford Anglias, Hillman Imps etc that, in many areas, replaced the traditional ‘bobby on the beat’.

  • Fully restored to police specification
  • Fun car for personal use or hiring out to TV/film companies
  • Equipped with reconditioned gearbox
