1991 Jaguar XJ-S Convertible

Registration - H701 BGH

Chassis No. - SAJJNADW3DB171107

M.O.T. - June 2022

As spring recedes in the rear view mirror, the minds of Britain’s car enthusiasts inevitably turn to open-topped motoring, and there are few more elegant options on the classic market than the convertible version of the XJ-S. The pre-facelift V-12-engined example offered here is notable for its TWR bodykit, the most prominent feature of which is its sizeable boot spoiler. The Jaguar rides on five-spoke alloy wheels and is finished in a handsome shade of deep metallic blue that’s matched to an equally dark blue hood and blue/grey leather interior trim. The vendor informs us that the sills have at some stage been replaced, while recent work has included the installation of a brand new hood and a degree of cosmetic repair to the rear bumper. Overall, he judges the car to be ‘in excellent condition for its age’ and regards the bodywork, paintwork, upholstery, 5.3-litre V12 engine and four-speed automatic transmission to all be in ‘good’ order.

Based on the XJ saloon, the coupe version of the XJ-S made its first appearance in September 1975. It was initially powered by the company’s 5.3-litre V12 engine mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox, but the manual option was soon withdrawn. A new High Efficiency engine with increased power was introduced in 1981, along with five-spoke alloy wheels, revised bumpers and updates to the interior trim. The cabriolet version, the XJ-SC, made its debut in 1983. However, it was not a full convertible, having a non-removable centre section and fixed cant rails above the doors. It was in 1988 that the Targa-type body was replaced with a fully convertible one, as per the sale car. Some 12,372 convertible XJ-Ss and 5,013 cabriolet XJ-SCs were made before the model range was replaced by the XK8 in 1996.

  • A striking pre-facelift V12-engined example
  • Boasts a brand new hood
  • Features a TWR bodykit with prominent rear spoiler
  • 12 Months M.O.T.
