  Lot 22

1991 Mercedes-Benz 230 E

Registgration - J941 GNV

Chassis No. - WDB1240232B573004

M.O.T. - Novemver - 2021

Odometer - 148,000

Properly maintained, Mercedes products have a habit of running and running, as confirmed by ‘J941 GNV’ that has 148,000 miles to its name so far but seems to be in fine fettle. It was apparently resprayed in its original livery of metallic blue two years ago – work that the vendor describes as a ‘fabulous job’. He rates the grey cloth interior as ‘good’, as ‘it’s really nice aside of a little bit of wear on the driver’s offside seat bolster’, and it would appear the period correct alloy wheels are all unmarked. He further notes that the electronics ‘work perfectly’ and that the car ‘drives superbly and is fully ready for the next owner to enjoy’. Its 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine is mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox, both of which he judges to be in ‘good’ order. Potentially great value in today’s market, this ultra-practical Benz is equipped with a tow hook and comes complete with a current MOT that’s valid until November 28 this year.

Introduced in 1984, Mercedes’ W124 range was available with petrol engines ranged in size from 2.0 to 5.0-litres and diesel ones from 2.0 to 3.0-litres, while body options comprised saloon, coupe, estate and cabriolet. When announced, the model’s drag coefficient of 0.28 was one of the lowest of any car on sale, and the line-up featured many items of advanced technology – eg its single windscreen wiper with eccentric pivot and its exhaust oxygen sensor. Safety was also a key feature of the model, which was designed to withstand an offset crash into a concrete barrier at 35mph without serious harm to the occupants. Height adjustable seat belts with pretensioners were standard up front and a driver’s side airbag a relatively novel option. In short, the car was arguably way ahead of its time.

  • In apparently fine fettle for its mileage
  • Comes complete with tow hook
  • A potential bargain
