The Bolesworth Castle September 2024 Classic, Performance & Supercar Auction

Lot 2

1946 MG TC Midget
***NO RESERVE*** Exported to the USA when new, repatriated in 2016 and has had extensive work done to make it a 'reliable and fun drive'

Registration - YWG 884

Chassis No. - TC0423

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 32,000

This charming MG TC Midget was built in January 1946, making it one of the earliest TCs built. As with so many of MG’s post-war sports cars, it was exported to the USA, where it resided in Illinois. It was imported back into the UK in 2016, and the vendor has owned it since 2019. They describe it as still looking very original, and has never had, nor needed, a body-off rebuild. “The bodywork shows very little rust, but could do with a respray to make it into a show car, as opposed to a car to drive – which is the reason I purchased it.” The bodywork is described as being in ‘good’ condition and the paint ‘average’. The odometer reads 32,000 miles.

Reflecting the vendor’s desire, ‘YWG844’ has benefitted from extensive work on both the 1,250cc engine and the running gear to make it a more reliable and fun car to drive. Engine, transmission and electrics are all described as being in ‘good’ condition. It was also fitted with Blockley tyres in 2020, and benefits from both a new hood and side screens. Inside, the vendor has fitted a beautiful new dashboard, but they have also retained the original walnut one fitted to the car from new. A neat extra detail, reflecting its history, is the fitment of a metal Union flag badge on the driver’s side, and a Flag of the United States on the passenger side.

The MG T-Type two-seater sports car series ran from 1936 to 1955 in multiple series – TA, TB, TC, TD and TF. The TC Midget was the first post-war MG, launched in 1945. It was a key post-war export model, and was sent to the United States in right-hand drive. The TC Midget was a welcome success for MG, with more than 10,000 produced in four years, more than any previous MG model.

In summary:

  • Very early MG TC Midget
  • Highly original thanks to long period in the USA
  • A satisfying car to drive thanks to extensive mechanical work
