The Bolesworth Castle March 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 2

1959 Ford Thunderbird
***NO RESERVE***

Registration - 343 XUS

Chassis No. - H9YH142727

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 20,015

If you’re a lover of 1950s Americana and have a hankering for a head-turning motor car with a throbbing V8, this second-generation Ford Thunderbird could be just what you’re looking for. All fins and chrome, this flame red 1959 ‘Squarebird’ is powered by a mighty 300hp, 352 cubic inch, 5800cc V8 engine that makes all the right noises. Inside, the inimitable 50’s American feel continues, with the cream and black trim, yet more chrome, electric windows and that handsome, steering wheel-mounted optional Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. Even the boot (or should we say ‘trunk’?) gets in on the act, with a distinctive grey and cream chequered lining. ‘343 XUS’ left the USA for the UK in 2009 and this left-hand-drive machine has had just three owners since it arrived on these shores. The current owner describes the engine, transmission, electrics and paintwork as ‘good’. The chrome would benefit from some TLC, as would the interior trim but, offered at No Reserve, this capacious four-seater is a great deal of car for the money. And it will certainly turn heads.

The first-generation Ford Thunderbird, produced from 1955-57, was a hugely popular two-seater. When they launched the second-generation model in 1958, Ford added two additional seats and added luxury elements more usually found in much more expensive cars. One advertising slogan was ‘New Ford Thunderbird seats four - now it’s twice the fun to own one!” What became known as the ‘Squarebird’ has been acclaimed as a sculptural masterpiece of Fifties Detroit design, and it’s easy to see why the second generation sold more than four times as many examples as its predecessor.

In summary:

  • An eye-catching example of Ford’s renowned ‘Squarebird’
  • A fantastic, four-seater companion for classic American car events
  • Offered at No Reserve
