This distinctive 1980 Jawa speedway bike is resplendent in blue and yellow with a yellow seat. The single-cylinder 500cc engine has been fully analysed and rebuilt by the vendor. This includes fully cleaning out the Castrol R oil and replacing it with Smith & Allan Limitless CR 40 – perfect for highly-stressed four-stroke competition engines. The engine, transmission and electrics are duly described as being in ‘excellent’ condition. Although the bike has no paperwork, the vendor says it is ready to race.
Jawa is a renowned force in the sport of speedway racing. Founded by Czech Frantisek Janecek, he initially chose to build a 500cc ‘Wanderer’ motorcycle under licence, but soon ended up acquiring the entire firm. This led to the Jawa name – the first two letters of his and Wanderer’s names. The move into speedway came in the 1960s with the company purchasing fellow Czech brand ESO. This saw Janecek’s firm perfecting the 500cc, single fixed gear and no brakes formula. Jawa has remained the leading engine manufacturer for purpose-built speedway machines to this day, with its frames also highly acclaimed.
