Lot 23

1979 MG Midget 1500
***NO RESERVE*** Barn find complete with hard top. Just three owners from new.

Registration - VCC 83V

Chassis No. - GAN6-215223G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 45518

Barn finds are an internet sensation, and this bona fide barn find MG Midget 1500 is one of the most charming and original you’ll find. ‘VCC83V’ was built in 1979 and has an odometer reading just 45,518 miles. Finished in what is believed to be BL Russet Brown, this car has both the standard soft-top and a period hard-top. Reassuringly, it comes with both a period dealer sticker from Lex Motor Co Wilmslow, and a period MG Owner’s Club badge on the bootlid.

The brown interior looks highly original, which will be a boon to restorers. This includes original carpeting and a footwell packed with a treasure trove of spare parts. It has what looks to be a rare Bush Arena stereo cassette player (Pioneer speakers are mounted behind the front seats), and an additional row of auxiliary dials below.

‘VCC83V’ has received recent attention following its emergence from its barn-find slumber. Parts include a new master cylinder, copper brake pipe, fuel tank and fuel sender. The front brake hose pipes have been refreshed, as have the rear right and left wheel cylinders. There is a period invoice from back in 2011 too, showing proof of further maintenance. The vendor reports it has had just three owners from new, and this highly original car looks to be a great platform for a satisfying restoration to bring it back to its former glory.

The MG Midget name was originally used from the 1920s to the 1950s, but was revived in 1961 for the small new lightweight two-seater that would sit below the MGB in the line-up. The original car was derived from the Austin-Healey Sprite, with various updates through the years culminating in the MG Midget 1500 which was sold between 1974 and 1980. It featured black plastic bumpers to meet US federal regulations, plus a 1500cc engine from the Triumph Spitfire. This model is one of the last to be produced, with production ending in December 1979 after almost 74,000 were built.

  • Rare barn find MG Midget in highly original condition
  • Just three owners from new
  • Invoices show recent work following its emergence from hibernation
