Some car designs improve with age and, to many eyes, that of the original XJ Series is like a fine wine, continuing to mature as the years roll by. A luxurious ride in any specification, the optimum version of the model (Jaguar or Daimler) is surely that powered by the company’s silky-smooth V12 engine, and that’s what’s on offer here. Finished in an attractive shade of metallic blue and trimmed in cream hide, ‘D53 DPL’ simply oozes quality. Its comprehensive history file includes evidence of ongoing maintenance, including the rebuilding of the rear axle and automatic gearbox and relatively recent replacement of the fuel tank. The engine has been treated to a ‘super enhanced’ ECU and pair of intake trumpets, as well as a stainless steel exhaust system. The facia has been renewed and the lot includes the old one, plus a selection of other spare parts. The vendor informs us that ‘the chassis is good with no underbody rot’ and currently grades the engine and transmission as ‘excellent’, the bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’ and the paintwork as ‘average to good’. He is now selling the Daimler complete with owner’s handbooks, Haynes manual and numerous invoices, as well as a current MOT valid to May 31 next year.
The Jaguar XJ Series and its Daimler counterparts were introduced in 1968. Some four years into production the 12-cylinder 5.3-litre XJ was offered for the first time, the Series 1, 2 and 3 Daimler versions of which were dubbed the Double-Six; thereby reviving the famous Daimler model name of the vintage era. While the first generation of six-cylinder XJ models was replaced by the long-awaited all new XJ40 in 1986, the Double-Six continued unchanged until 1993.
