March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 23

1990 Mercedes-Benz 260 E

Registration - H698 XUM

Chassis No. - WDB1240262B270224

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 118,989

This eye-catching W124 Mercedes is finished in metallic grey and trimmed in grey fabric check. Its outward appearance has been enhanced by the addition of a set of wide-rim AMG alloy wheels, stainless wheelarch trims and boot spoiler. To date it has had five keepers, the previous one of whom acquired it from his father and then retained the car for 23 years. The vendor considers the Benz to be in ‘lovely condition for its age’, and regards the 2.6-litre straight-six engine, automatic transmission, four-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘good’ order, and the tyres to be ‘good all-round’. He is now offering the car complete with: Alpine head unit, remote control, autochanger and twin 12inch subwoofer; tow pack; pair of keys; and a large collection of invoices, tax discs and old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid to July 2. The odometer currently stands at 118,989 miles.

Introduced in 1984, Mercedes’ W124 range was available with petrol engines ranged in size from 2.0 to 5.0-litres and diesel ones from 2.0 to 3.0-litres, while body options comprised saloon, coupe, estate and cabriolet. When announced, the model’s drag coefficient of 0.28 was one of the lowest of any car on sale, and the line-up featured many items of advanced technology – eg single windscreen wiper with eccentric pivot, and an exhaust oxygen sensor. Safety was also a key feature of the model, which was designed to withstand an offset crash into a concrete barrier at 35mph without serious harm to the occupants. Height adjustable seat belts with pre-tensioners were standard up front and a driver’s side airbag a relatively novel option. In short, the car was arguably way ahead of its time.

In summary:

  • A very well presented five-owner, 118,989-mile example
  • Equipped with a number of upgrades including Alpine sound system
  • Lots of paperwork and currently MOT’d into July
