This superbly presented Subaru is #005 of the 200 Impreza Series McRae limited-edition specials built to commemorate the maestro’s win in the 1994 Network Q Rally of Great Britian and 1995 World Rally Championship victory in the Subaru Impreza 555. Only c.80 of these highly collectable tribute cars are thought to remain registered worldwide, making this concours-standard version ever more desirable. Its rebuild was a labour of love carried out by a former Prodrive employee, who worked alongside McRae in the development of his championship-winning cars, and, spent several years searching for the perfect restoration candidate before purchasing #005. Built in November 1995, the appropriately registered ‘N555 MRE’ was initially employed by Prodrive to promote the launch of the limited-edition cars and celebrate the brand’s success in the World Championship. Its subsequent restoration has been well documented on the McRae Owners Club’s website and highly praised by the fraternity at large.
The shell was stripped bare before being chemically cleansed by Ribble Technology and then repaired, with genuine new panels being fitted as required. Once fully refurbished, the body was zinc primed before receiving some 17 coats of the correct Mica Blue paint and appropriate layers of lacquer. The underbody was treated with colour-coded stone chip paint and Lanoguard’s rust prevention solution. The interior was fully reconditioned and given a new colour-coded carpet set. The engine was stripped and rebuilt using a host of new parts including: oil pump, bearings, piston rings, water pump, Japspeed alloy radiator, intercooler, alternator and starter motor, plus a reconditioned turbo. The steering, suspension and braking systems were all fully reconditioned with many new parts, while the Speedline wheels were refurbished and shod with new 205/45x16 Yoyo Proxes TR1 tyres.
This immaculate four-keeper Subaru currently indicates a total mileage of 101,715, which is supported by the fully-documented service and MOT histories. It is now being offered complete with spacesaver wheel/tyre and tools, factory-fitted sunroof, Subaru radio/cassette, Prodrive over-mats and a large history file that includes a current MOT valid into September next year,
