March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 24

1967 Morris Minor 1000 Four-Door Saloon

Registration - HGS 95F

Chassis No - M/55D1191649M

M.O.T - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This tidy and original-looking Minor dates from 1967, so benefits from the 1098cc version of BMC’s trusty A Series engine. It is finished in Smoke Grey, trimmed in vinyl of a very similar hue and rides on standard cream-coloured steel wheels shod with a matching set of Mabor tyres. The vendor informs us that the Morris has recently been treated to a new fuel pump, SU carburettor and carpet set, and benefits from the addition of a disc brake conversion, electronic ignition and electric windscreen washers. He currently classes the engine and four-speed manual gearbox as ‘good’ and the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘average’, and is offering ‘HGS 95F’ complete with Kenwood radio/CD, roof aerial and locking fuel cap, plus a selection of old MOTs and a current advisory-free one valid into July. The odometer stands at a credible though unwarranted 40,137 miles.

With over 1.3 million examples manufactured in its 23-year reign, the Morris Minor is one of the most successful British cars of all time.

Designed by Alec Issigonis (who later penned the ubiquitous Mini), the Morris Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. There were two variants at launch – a two-door saloon and Tourer. The four-door saloon followed in 1950 and the popular Traveller, van and pick-up versions completed the range two years later. With the Series II of 1952 came a new, Austin-designed engine – the A Series 803cc OHV unit. The more major update of 1956 saw the engine increased in capacity to 948cc (the car was now renamed the Minor 1000), the rear window of the saloon enlarged and the split-screen front one replaced with a single glass. The final iteration appeared in 1962 and featured a further increase in engine capacity to 1098cc a modified facia layout with recessed centre section in textured steel, the return of a glovebox lid for the passenger-side cubby hole, improved heater and more contemporary–looking front light units.

In summary:

  • A tidy, honest-looking four-door example
  • Recently equipped with new fuel pump, carburettor and carpets
  • Uprated with a disc brake conversion and electronic ignition
