The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 24

1998 Subaru Impreza STi
Subtly upgraded, with an Alcatek ECU and Cat-back sports exhaust system

Registration - S55 NBR

Chassis No. - GC8-070414

M.O.T. - August 2024

Odometer - 101,487

This genuine matching numbers STI came off-line in Japan in 1998 and was first UK registered on October 20, 2009. It has remained in the present ownership since May 2015, shortly after which it was treated to a comprehensive engine rebuild by marque specialists API of Harbury in Warwickshire followed by the fitment and mapping of an Alcatek ECU by the Scooby Clinic of Chesterfield. The Impreza was last serviced only a few weeks ago, during which the cambelt and water pump were replaced – it has also recently had its standard exhaust system replaced by a de-cat one. ‘S55 NBR’ is finished in white and trimmed in two-tone grey cloth complete with STI logos, and is considered by the vendor to have an ‘excellent’ turbo engine, five-speed manual gearbox, four-door bodywork and paintwork, and ‘good’ upholstery. The Scooby is now being sold complete with Pioneer audio system, a partial service history, selection of invoices and a current MOT valid to August 24 next year. We understand the current odometer reading is a mix of kilometers and miles that currently equate to a total of 81,650 miles.

The Subaru Impreza (adapted from the Italian word impresa, meaning achievement) has been with us since November 1993, and was immortalized by the Prodrive-inspired run of WRC Constructors’ titles in 1995, 1996 and 1997, and Drivers’ championships for Colin McRae (1995), the late Richard Burns (2001) and Petter Solberg (2003). The model’s distinctive engine note stems from its four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine that has good inherent balance and makes for a low centre of gravity. The basis of the performance models has been the fourwheel drive, turbocharged WRX. In the late ‘80s, Subaru formed a division specifically to co-ordinate its motorsport activities; not least its assault on the FIA World Rally Championship. Dubbed Subaru Tecnica International (STI), it went on to create high-performance road-going derivatives of the WRX model, and the WRX STI remained the basis of the company’s rally programme from the time of its introduction in 1992. The first generation STI (1992-2001) was equipped with a turbocharged 2-litre version of the boxer engine.

In summary:

  • A very-tidy looking STI first UK registered in October 2009
  • The subject of a comprehensive engine rebuild in 2015
  • Equipped with Alcatek ECU and de-cat exhaust system
