This wonderfully elegant 1926 Lea-Francis J Type Drophead Coupe features hand-crafted coachwork by Cross and Ellis. The Coventry coachbuilder was responsible for all two-seater Lea Francis, and only around 130 of this type were believed to be made. Enhancing its rarity yet further, this car is possibly now one of only two left in existence. The vendor describes it as a “really nice example” that they’ve owned for five years. ‘IY 1788’ had a full nut and bolt restoration a few years ago, with bodywork and paintwork now in ‘good’ condition, and transmission and electrics described as ‘excellent’. The 1,247cc four-cylinder engine is paired with a three-speed manual transmission.
‘IY 1788’ also has an interior that’s described as being in ‘excellent’ condition. A tribute to expert craftsmanship, it features a full-width bench seat, wood dashboard veneer and period brass-faced instruments. The canvass soft-top roof is fully operational and there is even an additional ‘jump seat’ that pops up from the boot. Further period touches include a branded Esso fuel can on the side running board and a holder for extra spark plugs under the hinged bonnet. A terrific example of a 1920s motor car that’s packed with wonderful details, this carefully-crafted Lea-Francis J Type convertible will be a delight for any collector.
Coventry’s Lea-Francis was a pioneering motor manufacturer that built a plethora of cars from its Lower Ford Street works in the Warwickshire city. Founded in 1895, it began producing cars in 1903, first building Singers under licence, before producing its own models from 1919. The J Type was built between 1925 and 1928, with related cars including the K, L, M and N Types. The J Type was considered the core 12hp model, with both two-seater and four-seater versions available. The original Lea-Francis business ran until 1935, before being reformed several times over the decades.
