1981 Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1
***NO RESERVE*** An iconic hot hatch ripe for restoration

Registration – VPE 408X

Chassis No. – 17CW163595

M.O.T. – Exempt

Odometer – 117,050

The vendor informs us that this 1981 Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1, finished in black with its trademark red-striped seat upholstery, is offered as a restoration project. The car displays 117,050 miles on the odometer and presents as a complete, running example that would benefit from recommissioning and refurbishment to return it to the road.

A genuine UK-market GTi, it retains hallmark features of the model, including its flared wheelarches, four-lamp grille and period-correct ‘pirelli’ alloy wheels, with the original VDO instrumentation still in place. The car comes accompanied by a selection of historic MOT certificates, documentation, and a Haynes manual. While in need of restoration, the Mk1 Golf GTi remains one of the most sought-after and collectible hot hatches, and this example offers an ideal starting point for a sympathetic project.

The Volkswagen Golf GTi needs little introduction. Launched in 1976, the Mk1 GTi is widely credited with inventing the hot hatch category, offering practical everyday usability combined with spirited performance. Powered by a fuel-injected 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine producing around 110bhp, the Mk1 GTi was light, nimble, and hugely entertaining to drive. Its influence on the motoring world cannot be overstated, and today, early cars such as this remain icons of affordable performance.

  • Genuine UK-market Mk1 GTi, offered as a restoration project

  • Finished in black with hallmark red-striped GTi interior

  • Accompanied by history file including old MOTs and documentation

  • Offered without reserve
