A quintessential piece of American muscle car history, this striking 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is a genuine M-code car, denoting its factory 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 engine. Imported to the UK in 1973, the car has remained in the current family’s ownership for the past 15 years, during which time it has undergone significant restoration and careful preservation.
The vendor informs us the Mustang was originally acquired as a rolling shell with completed bodywork and paint. Since then, it has been sympathetically rebuilt with particular attention to mechanical and structural integrity. Stored under a fleece-lined indoor cover until last year, the car retains a remarkably preserved finish in clear-over-base Pewter Silver, enhanced by newly applied Mach 1 striping. The bodywork was extensively restored prior to the vendor’s ownership, with replacement panels including the rear quarters, floor pans, inner and outer rear wheel housings, boot floor, LH frame rails, hood with scoops, inner fenders, rear crossmember, and tail lamp panel. While no longer concours, the finish remains impressively sharp and very presentable – turning heads wherever it goes.
Mechanically, the car features a fully rebuilt 351 Cleveland V8, bored .030 over and equipped with forged TRW pistons, Speed Pro moly rings, and a Comp Cams 268H cam kit with matching springs and lifters. The engine rebuild also included refurbished heads, new oil pump, re-ground crank, and a double row Comp Cams timing chain. The fuelling is managed by a Holley 700cfm double pumper on a factory 4-barrel intake, complemented by a Mallory distributor, MSD coil, long-tube headers, and Ford Racing valve covers. The engine was run-in on a test rig, and supporting photos of the build are available.
Backing the engine is a rebuilt 4-speed Toploader manual transmission mated to a 9-inch locking rear axle – an ideal setup for spirited road use and true to the Mach 1’s performance ethos.
