The Bolesworth Castle March 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 29

1987 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6
The subject of a sympathetic cosmetic and mechanical restoration

Registration – D244 DFH

Chassis No. – VF3741C6607592074

M.O.T. – August 2024

Odometer – 116,957

This little pocket rocket is a stunning example of one of the most desirably hot-hatches on the market – and one of the originals that kick-started the whole genre. ‘D244 DFH’ is a beautifully presented Peugeot 205 1.6 GTi Phase One model which, according to the vendor, has been sympathetically restored to an extremely high standard. Painted in rally white with red on grey exterior trim, the interior features red carpets, trim details, and narrow stripes on the grey seats. The quality of both the interior and exterior is described as superb, as particular attention has been paid to keeping this 205 GTi as close to the original as possible. The vendor’s work has even included retaining features such as the original dealer number plates, as well as handbook pack, and keys. On top of the full restoration, it has recently had a new cambelt, brakes, and Hankook tyres fitted. Showing an indicated 116,957 miles on the odometer, ‘D244 DFH’ shows none of those on initial inspection, described by the present owner as driving superbly and ‘ready for show use’.

Peugeot’s 205 GTi is considered as one of the founding members of the hot-hatch club, packing in a punchy 1.6-litre 105bhp engine into a small and light package, which had a chassis and suspension set-up that could make the compact Pug dance along twisty roads. Introduced in 1984, it took another two years before the more powerful 1.9-litre GTi was introduced, with partisan support for both engine sizes. Other than a more powerful engine, the main difference between the two models were half-leather seats in the latter, as well as disk brakes all-round, and 15-inch Speedline alloys rather than the 14-inch wheels found on the 1.6 GTi. Production ceased in 1994, by which time Peugeot had both the 106 GTi and 306 GTi to cater for driving enthusiasts.

In summary

· Pristine example of one of the original hot hatchbacks

· Sympathetically and comprehensively restored to ‘show car’ quality

· Ideal opportunity to own a Peugeot 205 GTi that requires no immediate work
