‘DEZ 4282’ (the registration is included in the sale) has been the vendor’s third Bentley over many years and apparently his favourite, ‘being responsive and having a good ride courtesy of a suspension system that had been notably improved by 1988’. Indeed, he is reluctant to part with it, but apparently needs to for health reasons. Its attractive Graphite-coloured bodywork is complemented by slate-piped parchment hide and slate-coloured carpets. For the last six of the vendor’s 16-year tenure, the Mulsanne has been dry stored in a barn, but is said to ‘drive well’. He volunteers that the air conditioning is not currently operative and that the door caps would benefit from re-varnishing. In summary, he currently rates the interior trim, normally-aspirated V8 engine and automatic transmission as being in ‘good’ order, and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. He is now offering the Mulsanne complete original set of lambswool over-rugs, toolkit, full set of owner’s manuals and a complete service history. The odometer currently registers 183,920 miles.
A square-cut, broad-shouldered design, the Bentley Mulsanne was styled in-house by Austrian-born Fritz Feller and drew its name from the fastest section of the Le Mans race circuit on which Bentley Triumphed no less than five times between the wars. Introduced at the 1980 Paris Salon, the newcomer enjoyed notably greater road presence than its T2 predecessor, as well as a 30 per cent larger glass area. By combining copious amounts of sound deadening with the finest quality upholstery, Crewe's engineers kept intrusion from the 6.75-litre engine to a muted hush (unless the model's reputed 120mph potential was fully explored). Just 482 Bentley Mulsanne saloons were made between 1980 and 1992.
