This 1991 fast Ford is believed to have started life in Ireland and was first registered by the DVLA in 1998, since when it has had just three registered keepers. Unlike many of these Fiestas, it appears to remain as originally specified, other than the fact that it now rides on a set of smart new five-spoke Mondeo alloy wheels. It has also recently benefited for a new exhaust system, and the vendor now considers the turbo engine, five-speed manual gearbox, black bodywork and grey cloth interior trim to all be in ‘good’ order. Sadly, though looking spritely enough now, ‘H91 POG’ was unfortunate enough to be declared a Category C insurance write-off in 1997. However, the vendor informs us that it currently ‘sounds and drives well’, and he’s now offering the car complete with a pair of keys and history file containing a selection of invoices and receipts.
Ford introduced the RS version of the Fiesta in 1990. It was based on the XR3i that had been introduced a year earlier, the most obvious differences being 14 rather than 13” wheels, a colour-coded rear spoiler, green rather than blue side stripes, opening rear quarter windows, green tinted glass and bonnet louvres. At its heart was a turbocharged version of the company’s 1.6-litre CVH engine. It was broadly the same as that used for the Escort RS Turbo, save for having a smaller Garrett T2 turbocharger and Ford rather than Bosch fuel injection system. The output was 133bhp and 183Nm of torque – sufficient to power the Fiesta from zero to 60mph in around 7.9 seconds and on to a terminal speed of over 130mph. The interior sported Recaro seating, but was otherwise very much like that of the XR2. Production of the model ceased in 1992 after some 4,500 examples of the model had been built. It is thought as few as 120 of those remain in the UK, most of which are thought to have been modified in some way or another, making original specification examples a rarity.
