The Peugeot 205 GTI is one of the most iconic hot hatches ever, and this highly original 1988 model is a great opportunity to acquire a car with a great spec. A desirable and more powerful 205 GTI 1.9, ‘F659YWM’ is notably a pre-power steering car – experts agree this gives the best steering feel for that authentic hot hatch experience. This Phase 1 model also has original part-leather seat trim, along with the vivid red carpets that marked out 205 GTI models. The odometer reads just 67,000 miles, which is enviably low and adds further to this car’s collectability. With 130bhp, the 1.9-litre engine delivers 0-60mph performance in just 7.8 seconds.
‘F659YWM’ has bodywork, paintwork and interior described as being in ‘good’ condition, and a transmission that’s ‘excellent’. The vendor adds they were planning to keep the car in their collection, so had a large number of jobs done to get it mechanically perfect, while keeping everything original – a full list will be included in the sale, along with a lever arch file of receipts going back to 2020. The vendor also had it inspected by Peugeot 205 specialist PR Developments, who described it as a “very good original car”. The only jobs remaining are a squeak from the brakes, a fan that doesn’t work (a new fan is included in the sale) and a faulty stereo – it is the collectable original Peugeot-branded Clarion cassette player and the vendor didn’t want to replace it. The car has an MOT until August 2025 along with a clear HPI vehicle history check.
The Peugeot 205 GTI was the high-performance version of the famous 205 supermini, the car that saved Peugeot in the 1980s. Originally fitted with a fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine, the 1.9-litre version followed later – marked out by its beefier 15-inch alloy wheels and smart part-leather interior. The extra power and torque made it even more thrilling, while the extra grip from the larger tyres added poise to the cornering. Today, the 205 GTI is recognised as a genuine classic hot hatch, with values rising all the time.
