‘M848 YBV’ is a very sought-after example of the second generation W20 MR2. Fitted with the deeply admired 3S-GTE turbocharged engine as used in the Celica GT-Four, ‘M848 YBV’ represents the ultimate expression of MR2, midengined 1990’s cool. This example was imported to the UK in 2004 and is now in the hands of its fourth UK keeper to date. ‘M848 YBV’ is reported to be in a highly original condition throughout with only the audio head unit reported as non-standard. Even ‘M848 YBV’s’ vivid yellow livery is thought to be original. The MR2 has been kept garaged for the last eight years and wanted for nothing in terms of upkeep and maintenance. Being offered with ample, provenance providing paperwork.
In many ways ‘M848 YBV’ is a car built around a legendary engine. The 3S-GTE unit, here in third generation form, is a mechanical hero of the JDM world, renowned for its power, reliability and tunability. Although it is based on the naturally aspirated 3S-GE, the 3S-GTE has added under-piston oil squirters and a lower compression ratio to accommodate the addition of the turbocharger. Toyota worked in conjunction with Yamaha on this unit, with the latter designing the 16-valve dual overhead cam (DOHC) cylinder head used in this engine. The cylinder head is made using aluminium alloy and was thought to originally produce around 220bhp. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a five speed manual transmission. The vendor rates the transmission and electrics of ‘M848 YBV’ as “excellent” and the engine as “good.”
The second generation of MR2 is inherently a striking car with a rounded off, mid-engine aesthetic not dissimilar to a mini Ferrari. That is especially true of this striking example in its vivid yellow livery and big cross spoked, diamond cut alloy wheels. The two seater cabin is finished in its original blue fabric upholstery and admirably maintains the impressive originality of this rare MR2. The vendor rates the bodywork and paintwork as “good” and the interior as “excellent.”
