Lot 32

1970 Fiat 500L

Registration - EGU 712H

Chassis No. - 2645405

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 50,309

This characterful little left-hand drive 1970 Fiat 500 L is an Italian import, and presented in a combination of eye-catching Mustard Yellow with black leather interior. Beautifully kept throughout, the compact Fiat retains period touches such as the canvas sunroof and luggage rack, fitted above the rear-mounted air-cooled 498cc engine. Showing 50,309 km on the odometer, (though we cannot verify the mileage) and registered with three owners since being imported to the UK in 2017, the vendor has owned ‘EUG 712H’ for two years, and in that time has put it through his workshop to get it road legal, having previously been fully-restored. Since then, it has been kept in a heated garage, and can be seen in ‘as showroom’ condition, with the vendor describing all aspects of the Fiat’s condition as ‘excellent’.

The so-called Nuova 500 was designed by Dante Giacosa. At its introduction in July 1957 the little Fiat was powered by a twin-cylinder engine of 479cc, the maximum power of which was a mere 13bhp. However, with a dry weight of just 470kg, it could nevertheless exceed 50mph and average 60mpg. Tough, economic, reliable and sensibly-priced, it made car ownership a reality for millions for whom it had previously been a mere dream, and a 500 was the first car for countless teenagers – Grand Prix drivers Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi included. By 1965 the engine capacity had grown to 499.5cc, raising the output to 22bhp and the top speed to 60mph. The last 500 rolled off the production line in 1975, by which time no less than 3.25 million had been built.

In summary:

· Stunning example of the ever-popular Fiat 500

· Imported, fully-restored LHD model

· Includes features such as rear-mounted luggage rack and canvas sunroof
