The Bolesworth Castle May 2025 Classic, Performance & Supercar Auction

Lot 33

1952 Morgan Plus 4
One of reputedly just 348 Plus 4 'Flat Rad' two-seaters built

Registration – WXS 511

Chassis No. – P2358

M.O.T. – Exempt

Odometer – 37,488

This rare 1952 Morgan Plus 4 is the desirable Drophead Coupe version, often known as DHC. Despite the Plus 4’s long production run, the DHC is a rare version, with only 450 or so produced during almost a two-decade production run. This is one of the earlier, and even rarer, flat-rad cars, using the 2,086cc Standard Vanguard four-cylinder engine. The engine and transmission are described as being in ‘excellent’ condition with the vendor reporting the engine “starts easily and does everything it should to provide a brisk and sporting drive”. It has recently undergone a full service, brake overhaul and new wheel cylinders all round.

‘WXS511’ was the subject of an earlier restoration and is still in superb overall condition, reports the vendor. “The dark red paintwork suits the car well, with period steel wheels and chrome hubcaps.” Inside, there are new carpets which, along with the roof, are in good condition. The rest of the interior is described as all-original. The vendor adds that the chassis and bodywork are “in very good order, as to be expected for a low-mileage, garage-stored classic”.

The Morgan Plus 4 was introduced in 1950 as a development of the existing 4/4. The chassis was strengthened and widened, and it had a longer wheelbase. It was powered by a 2,088cc Standard Vanguard four-cylinder engine. Body styles included two-seater and four-seater sports coupe, and the more luxurious drophead coupe (DHC) seen here. The original Plus 4 ran until 1969, was revived between 1985-2000, revived again between 2005-2020, and now an advanced new version based on a bonded aluminium chassis is available.

In summary:

  • Rare 1952 Morgan Plus 4 Drophead Coupe.
  • Even rarer flat-rad version.
  • Described as being in “superb overall condition”.
