It seems impossible that the revolutionary DS was revealed to a stunned public as much as 67 years ago. Rarely seen today, examples draw crowds whenever they do appear. This notably tidy lefthand drive example pairs beige bodywork with a brown vinyl interior. Believed to have had just one French owner, it was imported to the UK in 2004, since when it has had only four further keepers. The most recent one acquired it earlier this year in order to undertake a 2,000-mile long tour through Europe, which he tells us it achieved without fault or use of oil while averaging 27mpg. Since its return to these shores the car has been treated to two bouts of maintenance courtesy of Willow Garage of Antrobus, Cheshire, which comprised a detailed service and general checkover, plus the replacement of several suspension bellows and rustproofing of the underside and doors. It also had its steering checked by Citroën Classics, who reputedly volunteered that the DS was ‘one of the best we’ve tried’. The vendor now regards the 2175cc engine and five-speed manual gearbox as ‘excellent’, the saloon bodywork as ‘good’ and the paintwork and upholstery as ‘average’, and adds that ‘the structure is very solid with no rust’. He is now offering ‘BVM 78K’ complete with a 123 electronic ignition system, K&N air filter, a yet-to-be-fitted DAB radio and a number of spares, plus a history file.
The futuristic design of the DS’s Flaminio Bertoni-penned body was a stunning sight in the austere world of the ‘50s, while its self-levelling hydropneumatic suspension was also way ahead of its time. Some 1,455,746 DSs were manufactured over the 20 years of production.
