This charmingly unmolested example of Germany’s answer to the ubiquitous Lambretta was imported by Ambassador Motorcycles and sold to its first owner by the dealer Pinks of Harrow – it still bears their badge on the legshield. It was last road registered in 1969 and the related tax disc remains in the holder to this day. All its original chrome is still in place and the white and blue paintwork has a wonderful weathered look about it. The dual seat has apparently been professionally recovered in recent times. The air-cooled two-stroke engine is the more powerful of the two options – a 10bhp unit of 200cc. The four-speed manual gearbox is operated by a floor change and, unlike some rivals of the period, the scooter features an electric start. According to the vendor, this rare two-wheeler ‘runs beautifully’ and now just requires a V5 in order to return to the roads once again, though one assumes a degree of recommissioning would also be prudent. The indicated mileage stands at 32,991 and the Bella comes complete with luggage rack and spare wheel. A rare opportunity.
The tubular steel-framed Zündapp Bella was in production from 1953 to 1964, during which time some 130,000 were manufactured. Early versions featured 146cc engines and 6 volt electrical systems. The 197cc version became available in 1954, the later examples of which, such as the sale bike, featured 12 volt electrics and an electric rather than kick start. The top speed of the bigger-engined variant was a more than respectable 75mph.
