There are certain classics that have so much presence they’re guaranteed to stop you in your tracks, and the C3 is a prime example – it looks like it’s doing a 100mph even when completely stationary. One of the last of the carburettor models, ‘DBB 288V’ is finished in the relatively subtle hue of Claret Red that’s matched to burgundy/red leather interior trim. It has had four keepers since arriving on UK shores in 2005, the most recent of whom acquired it from a Corvette specialist in 2018. He regards the lefthand drive car as ‘very nice and presentable, mechanically very sound and with a body free of any cracking or crazing’. In summary, he presently grades the 5.7-litre (350 ci) small-block V8 engine, ‘very smooth’ automatic transmission and bodywork as ‘good’, the upholstery as ‘good-excellent’ and the paintwork as ‘average-good’. The Chevy is believed to have covered a total of only c.42,000 miles to date and is now being offered complete with its original radio, handbook and a genuine Chevrolet workshop manual. A very affordable entry ticket into the rarefied world of the American muscle car.
The third generation Corvette (C3) came to market in 1968 and was continually developed until the all-new C4 model of 1984. While the engine and chassis components were mostly carried over from the C2, the interior and most striking of bodies were all new. The exterior design was a development of that penned by Larry Shinoda under the guidance of Bill Mitchell for the Mako Shark II concept car. 1979 was the best ever year for Corvette production, with 53,807 cars manufactured.
