Those who enjoy an automotive challenge but are fed-up fighting the rust of a typical British restoration project will be pleased to note that this lefthand drive Camaro has spent its life in Nevada, so boasts corrosion free bodywork and floor. As can be seen from the accompanying photos, the lower front core support is bent, but fear not as the car comes complete with a good one, so no new panels are required. The Chevy is powered by a small-block V8 engine that looks complete but apparently doesn’t currently run. The transmission is automatic and braking up front is by discs rather than drums. This interesting low mileage (54,000) car has only recently been imported, but comes with NOVA certificate and all relevant taxes and duties have been paid so, as the vendor is keen to point out, the Camaro has clean title and is being sold as a restoration project rather than salvage.
Concerned at the runaway success of Ford’s pony car, the ubiquitous Mustang, General Motors brought the first generation Camaro to market in the September of 1966. It was based on a new rear-wheel drive platform and shared both that and a variety of other major components with the Pontiac Firebird. The 2+2 was available as a two-door Coupe or Convertible and came with a choice of six powerplants, from a 4.1-litre straight six to a 6.5-litre V8, and three trim and tuning packages – RS, SS and Z28. Like Ford, Chevrolet believed the old adage that ‘whatever won on Sunday sold on Monday’ and wasted little time in taking to the tracks. In the US, this meant contesting the SCCA-sanctioned Trans-Am Series. Working with Roger Penske, they operated an unofficially factory-backed team, winning the title outright with Mark Donohue at the wheel.
