The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 38

1985 Bentley Continental Convertible
Rare early carburettor model by Mulliner Park Ward

Registration - C853 BJD

Chassis No. - SCBZD0008FCH10238

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 85,395

This pretty 1985 Bentley Continental Convertible is pleasingly finished in an elegant and very period 1980s pale green metallic. The Mulliner Park Ward bodywork and paintwork are described as being in ‘excellent’ condition, as are the 6.75-litre V8 engine and automatic transmission. ‘C853 BJD’ has a current MOT and the odometer reads 85,395 miles, though this is not warranted. The car has a cream leather interior with dark green piping, featuring indulgent, dark green lamb’s wool carpets – and the modern convenience of a satellite navigation system. This is expertly integrated into the facia, maintaining an ‘OE’ appearance. The vendor says this car is a rare early carburettor example, “one of 400 made”. This sleek Bentley convertible also benefits from a recent brake overhaul.

The Bentley Continental line is a storied and popular one within Bentley Motors. It was originally used between 1952-1965 to signify special chassis with more powerful engines, which were supplied to hand-picked coachbuilders for the fitting of specialist bodywork. The name was later revived in 1984 as a more focused coupe and convertible version of the Rolls-Royce Corniche. The Continental name was also used to mark the rebirth of Bentley as a company distinct from Rolls-Royce, following the Volkswagen takeover of the brand; the pivotal Bentley Continental GT was introduced in 2003 and survives to this day.

In summary:

· 'Excellent'-condition Bentley Continental Convertible by Mulliner Park Ward

· Rare early carburettor model

· Features smartly-integrated sat nav system
