Lot 39

1952 Singer 9 Roadster Series 4A

Registration - XHK 598

Chassis No. - 4A4408T

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 75,961

This beautifully-presented 4A appears to have led a very sheltered life, having only had five owners in 69 years, who’ve amassed a total of just 75,961 miles between them. It was actually manufactured in 1949 but for some reason not registered until February 11, 1952, when it was purchased by a Mr Laurence Ellis of Great Sutton. He retained the car until December 1983, when the title passed to a Mr Harold Jones of Wrexham. The subsequent keepers have been a Mr Vic Morris of Oswestry, a Mr Peter Smith of Skipton and then the vendor, Mr Brian O’Donnell of Wybunbury. He took possession of it in March 2015, since when it has been used as a show vehicle on behalf of his business – Memory Lane Classics. It unsurprisingly engendered much admiration when featured on the Singer club stand at the 2019 NEC Classic Car Show.

Its red four-seat bodywork is matched by burgundy-coloured leather interior trim and carpets and it rides on red-painted steel wheels, all of which is complemented by suitably shiny brightwork. The vendor currently considers the bodywork, paintwork, upholstery, 1074cc engine and four-speed manual transmission to all be in ‘good’ order. This charming roadster comes complete with full weather equipment, flashing indicators (its semaphore arms are still in place), driver’s side rear-view mirror, tools, and chrome badge bar.

The roadster was a two-door convertible version of the Bantam saloon and first sold in 1939. The model re-emerged virtually unchanged after the war up until the 4A variant of 1949 that featured a Solex carburettor in place of the original SU, a four rather than three-speed gearbox and a roomier interior.

In summary:

  • A very well presented example
  • Low mileage for its age of 75,961
  • Comes with details of all its five owners to date
