M.O.T. - No M.O.T.
Odometer - 60,762
In common with some of the other ‘80s/‘90s cars in this sale, ‘WVJ 508Y’ is one of the last survivors of a once common model – one source suggests it is among just 15 Chevettes still licensed for the road. It is a genuine ‘barn find’, having been recently rescued following years of dry storage, and the vendor suggests that it will require a fairly comprehensive restoration, though it looks complete and straight. To help the cause, a new lower front panel and nearside wing form part of the lot, and currently lie unwrapped in the back of the car. We understand the engine turns over and note that the odometer registers a credible 60,762 miles from new. Finished in brown that’s matched to a tan vinyl interior, the manual gearbox Vauxhall is now being offered at No Reserve, complete with glass sunroof, auxiliary front and rear lamps, stereo system and set of aftermarket alloy wheels.
The Chevette (baby Chevrolet) was Vauxhall’s version of its parent company’s so-called ‘T- Car’ programme, versions of which were marketed around the world under different names. The model was inspired by the 1973 fuel crisis and, though clearly diminutive by US standards, slotted in neatly below the Viva in the UK, where it was one of the first of the small hatchbacks destined to take the market by storm - indeed, the Chevette was Britain’s best-selling hatchback from its launch in 1975 until 1978. The comprehensive range comprised the three-door hatchback, both two and four-door saloons, a three-door estate and three-door van. Combining an improved version of the Viva’s 1256cc OHV engine with the Chevette’s relatively light body made for a rewarding level of performance.
