1986 VW Golf GTi MK2
***NO RESERVE*** Ultra-desirable factory Turbo Technics, a significant piece of hot hatch automotive history

Registration - A18 VWT

Chassis No. - WVWZZZ19ZGW484798

M.O.T. - January 2025

Odometer - 108,500

Gloriously resplendent in Guards Red, this example of VW’s Golf GTi Mk II embraces its Eighties heritage with gusto, and is offered at no reserve. ‘A18 VWT’ is an early ‘Type 19’ model of Volkswagen’s Golf GTi, which on delivery in the mid-Eighties was immediately sent away fro a full BBS bodykit to be fitted, and then off to Turbo Technics for an engine overhaul. As such, this Golf GTi may have the familiar 1.8-litre four-pot and five-speed gearbox of other models, but there the similarity ends. Featuring that all-round body-kit, aero wheels, bright red paintwork, and boot spoiler, ‘A18 VWT’ is eye-catching before you even get to the interior, which is kitted out in grey, with red and grey striped sports seats.

Not only was ‘A18 VWTR’ modified from new, but the vendor, just the second keeper from new, has also worked further magic on it. There’s a changed speedo - the original is supplied too, showing up to 160mph to reflect the increased performance from the Turbo Technics work. The engine and gearbox have both been rebuilt in recent years, with 3,000 miles on the current unit and 2,000 on the transmission - which also saw a new clutch fitted and limited slip differential added. There are Vibra Tech engine mounts, a custom aluminium radiator, Bilstein dampers, and Eibach anti-roll bars, as well as Tarox front brakes fitted. Overall, the model has had around £30,000 spent over the past 10 years on it, and as such, despite the indicated 108,500 miles on the odometer, is considered in superb condition. The engine, bodywork, paint, and interior are rated ‘good’, while the transmission and electrics are thought of as ‘excellent’.

· Highly sought after Turbo Technics Golf GTi Mk II

· Full BBS body-kit and other modifications

· Offered at no reserve

It’s safe to say that the Volkswagen Golf that arrived in 1974 was a crucial model for the manufacturer. The Giugiaro-designed hatchback has gone on to become one of the best-selling models in history, and it also spawned the GTi - one of the first hot-hatchbacks ever. The GTi was developed as a ’Skunkworks’ project by VW employees, rather than an official project, and it was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975. Initially planned as a limited run model, popularity quickly changed that idea, with the lightweight hatch’s stiffened springs and eager 1.6-litre engine impressing journalists and buyers alike. The Mk II model arrived in 1983, and again a GTi version followed shortly after. Now using a 1.8-litre engine, it allowed the same formula, and helped cement the GTi’s status. Production lasted until 1992, when the Mk III arrived.
