September 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 43

1994 Renault Clio Williams
UK-delivered, first series model and said to be one of just 390 produced

Registration - L24 RCW

Chassis No. - VF1C57M0510863219

M.O.T. - October 2022

Odometer - 127,700

These special limited edition Clios, sparked by Alain Prost’s 1993 World Championship victory in the Williams Renault, have been cult cars from day one. ‘L24 RCW’ is No.0119 from the desirable first series, only 390 of which were built for the UK market and, according to the vendor just, 51 of which remain on the UK roads. It was treated to a windows out respray in 2009 and some recent paint correction and is now resplendent in its original livery of 449 Sports Blue and correct gold-coloured Speedline alloy wheels. Its originality extends to the interior too, which still boasts its ‘W’ monogrammed grey cloth seats, blue Williams-branded floor mats, Philips DC521 radio/cassette, bonnet and driver’s door stickers, and even the suit carrier that nestles below the rear parcel shelf. Recent maintenance has included the replacement of the timing belt, water pump and front dampers (2020), front discs and pads (2021) and, more recently still, the replacement of the inner and outer sills and refurbishment of the spare wheel.

Clearly very presentable, the car was apparently picked for the Youngtimers display at the recent Oulton Park Gold Cup race meeting and won the ‘2022 Best Hot Hatch’ award at Gawsworth Hall. The vendor nowadays rates the 145bhp engine, JC5 manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ order, and is now selling the 127,700 mile Clio complete with advisory-free MOT valid until October 19. Back in 2005, when its value was a fraction of what Clio Williams can fetch today, ‘L24 RCW’ was unfortunate to be classified as CAT C after sustaining damage while parked. Long since repaired, it therefore represents a potential bargain in today’s market, where the model is ever more keenly sought.

In summary:

  • A very well-presented example of the first series of Clio Williams
  • Retains all the original features unique to the model
  • Lots of recent maintenance and resprayed in 2009
