September 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 44

1995 Renault Clio Williams 2
UK-delivered, second series model and said to be one of just 482 produced

Registration - M460 YVF

Chassis No. - VF1C57M0512392861

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 67,540

According to Experian Autocheck, ‘M460 YVF’ has had just five keepers from new, the most recent of whom has retained it since 2014. A cult model from day one, Clio Williams tend to lead privileged lives, and the vendor readily admits that in his hands this apparently very tidy and original example has been ‘used for shows, but otherwise garaged and pampered’. As recently as May 2020 it was treated to a number of replacement parts, including: fan belt; rear dampers; front top mounts; nearside rear brake caliper and handbrake cable. The vendor presently has no hesitation in grading the four-cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission, bodywork and interior trim as all being in ‘excellent’ order, and the blue paintwork as ‘good’. He is now offering the Renault complete with full service history stamped to 67,460 miles (since when a mere 80 miles have been added), a selection of tax discs and invoices and a current, advisory-free MOT valid to July 7 next year.

The first of three generations of Clio Williams was unveiled in 1993 and was a nod to the relationship between Renault and the Williams F1 team to whom Renault was supplying engines. Williams had no involvement in the Clio Williams models, however, which were built by the company’s in-house motorsport department and based on the regular 1,800cc Clio 16S. The uprates included: a 2,000cc version of the engine with bigger valves, different camshaft, exhaust manifold etc that produced 145bhp and drove through a modified JC5 gearbox. The suspension was firmed up and the car featured a wider front track and broader Speedline alloy wheels. The second and third generation versions largely reflected the changes to the standard model range. The total production of all three generations was 12,100, but only 1,180 of those were built for the UK market, just 482 of which were from the second generation, of which the sale car is one.

In summary:

  • An apparently very tidy and original example of a rare breed
  • Comes complete with a full service history from new
  • Treated to a number of replacement parts in 2020
