It is rare to find a completely unmolested Spitfire in as presentable condition as ‘ANH 766’ - it even retains its original Dutton Forshaw dealer sticker and number plates. Built in the last month of Spitfire production, it is finished in a vibrant shade of blue, trimmed in a mix of black vinyl and black and white check fabric, and rides on a pristine set of chrome wire wheels shod with quality Michelin XAS tyres. Its total indicated mileage of 47,897 appears to be borne out by the MOT record, and this very pretty four-owner example is now being offered complete with stainless steel exhaust system, electronic ignition, electric fan, tonneau and full body covers, Moto-Lita leather-rimmed steering wheel, radio/cassette player, original book pack and service record.
The prototype Spitfire was produced by Standard Triumph in 1957. It was based on a modified Herald chassis clothed in a swooping body penned by Giovanni Michelotti. Unlike the rival Austin-Healey Sprite, it featured wind-up windows; also a single-piece front end that folded forward to provide optimum access the engine bay. There was much support for the car, however production was initially impossible due to Standard Triumph’s dire financial situation. Indeed, it was eventually delayed until 1962, by which time the company had been taken over by Leyland. Introduced in 1974, the final iteration of the Spitfire was called the 1500, in deference to its 1493cc engine. By then the car’s much criticised rear suspension had been fully sorted and the car progressively developed inside and out. By the time production ceased in 1980, over 95,000 examples of the popular 1500 had been built - the largest run of all the variants.
In summary:
• A remarkably unmolested four-owner example
• Total indicated mileage of 47,897 supported by the MOT history
• Features stainless steel exhaust, electronic ignition and electric fan
